An old Second World War fighter airfield in Somerset is to be used this autumn for a major fund-raising event to help keep a very modern aircraft flying.
The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance hopes to raise thousands of pounds from its Trickey Warren Trek, which is being held on the former RAF Culmhead aerodrome, on the Blackdown Hills, near Taunton.
The event on Sunday, September 20, features four different sponsored runs, making it accessible for people of all ages and capabilities to take part.
Funds raised by the runners will help to meet the costs of the charity’s Eurocopter EC135T2 helicopter, which so far this year has been called to more than 450 emergencies across the two counties.
The multi-terrain Trickey Warren Trek has a 2K fun run suitable for all the family to enter, a 4K run for individuals and for teams, and a challenging 10K course for more serious runners which is being held under the rules of UK Athletics.
Entrants can run, jog, or even walk the various events, which take place over forest trails and uneven ground along the edges of the Blackdown Hills plateau.
Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance charity manager Charlotte Routley said: “We are already getting lots of interest from families and friends living all over Dorset and Somerset who want to take part in the Trickey Warren Trek.
“We hope they will enjoy themselves and have a fun day out as well as helping us to raise much-needed funds for our charity.
“They do not have to be experienced runners to take part, in fact they can even choose to walk the route and it will still be an enjoyable day while also supporting an emergency service which is saving lives every day of the week.
“People can enter by visiting the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance website and downloading the entry form, or they can call us on 01823 669604.
“It may not be commonly known, but the air ambulance does not receive any Government funding at all, so we have to raise all of our money from donations and fund-raising events like the Trickey Warren Trek.
“We are delighted that so many people recognise the valuable service the air ambulance provides in getting people to hospital as quickly as possible and that they are willing to give up their time and make the effort to help us by taking part in events such as the Trickey Warren Trek.
“The air ambulance is an absolutely vital service and you never know if the next time the helicopter is called out it could be for you or one of your family.”
The Trickey Warren Trek is being sponsored by Summerfield Developments, which is providing T-shirts for the entrants, and also by Esporta Health Clubs, Hall and Woodhouse, Gadd Group, Glastonbury Spring Water Co, InterSport Tony Pryce Sports, and Buff Urban Day Spa.
