April 2009
Work has just begun on 23 new affordable homes for local people in Alcombe, Minehead, which will be ready by March next year.
Developers Summerfield Homes of Taunton have teamed up with West Somerset Council to provide 12 two-bed flats, six three-bed houses and five two-bed houses in Lower Marshfield Road. Originally the intention was to sell all the properties at a discount to local people who meet the council’s affordable housing criteria but now the flats will provide low cost rented accommodation, while the 11 houses will be sold at a 30% discount.
Summerfield director Chris Winter said, "This week, we agreed in principle with Magna West Somerset Housing Association that they would buy the flats. This change to the original scheme has come about because of the changing market conditions and the difficulty first time buyers are having in getting mortgages."
A similar development by Summerfield under its ‘My Home’ scheme near Wellington last year had a waiting list of would-be purchasers and all the houses were snapped up as soon as they were available.
West Somerset Council’s Housing Portfolio Holder, Cllr Kate Kravis, visited the site with the council’s affordable housing officer, Heather Crockford, and project team leader, Nigel Furze, to meet Summerfield’s Chris Winter and Richard Nicol as clearance work got underway.
Cllr Kravis said, "I am delighted to see the start of this new exciting project which gives local people, particularly young people on incomes under £35,000 a year, the chance to own their own home.
"I am also really pleased to see more affordable homes to rent coming onto the market thanks to our partnership with Summerfield and Magna. People are starting to appreciate that these developments are potential homes for their children and grandchildren.
"We will continue to look for other development sites for projects like these which are vital in providing local homes for our local families."
Summerfield, working with the neighbouring Alcombe Children’s Centre, plan to create a wildlife project in one corner of the site. This could become a long-term project for the children using the Centre to enjoy following the completion of development.
