HERMAN MILLER, CHIPPENHAM

25 August 2006

Summerfield Developments (SW) Limited have recently completed their greenest office building yet. This special building is located on Summerfield's Turnpike Park, Chippenham and comprises 24,000 ft². The offices were specially designed for freeholders Herman Miller, an American company specialising in office furniture.

The Greenest Yet

The property was built to a high specification using many recycled and sustainable materials to achieve an 'Excellent' award in the BREEAM office ratings, as well as a Gold award in LEED, the American equivalent of BREEAM.

Central heating and through flow natural ventilation were chosen rather than air conditioning and the building is kept cool by a glazed north facing screen and automatic opening windows.

Rainwater is recycled and 'Japanese' type chains are used for downpipes together with use of plenty of natural materials including a polished concrete floor and extensive use of the exposed structure to minimise finishes.

Summerfield Chairman, Richard Lloyd commented "Herman Miller are particularly concerned about the environment and we are proud to be the developers of this innovative building. Natural materials have been used throughout, including sustainable Scandinavian 'Glvlam' timber beams to support the roof structure. Herman Miller have taken green issues very seriously and we have produced a cost effective building that should be significantly cheaper to run than conventional offices.

We are extremely pleased Herman Miller chose Turnpike Park for their UK headquarters following hard on the heels of the 50,000 ft² European headquarters of Wincanton plc which we completed in 2005.
