Summerfield Developments Ltd, Taunton, has applied to build 36 affordable homes for local first time buyers and people on the housing waiting list at Ham, Chelston.

Chris Winter, Director of Housing for Summerfield, said the company hopes to be able to sell two bedroom houses for £75,000 and three bedroom houses for £99,000 with no subsidy from either the council or housing associations. "Within the sale agreement of each property there will be a mechanism to preserve the discount of the open market value of each houses offered to the initial purchaser for subsequent local buyers."

Mr Winter said Summerfield had seen the opportunity to build the homes following calls by the Government for more affordable housing as demand is far outstripping supply.

He added: "We are hopeful that this initiative will be supported by councillors at Taunton Deane."

Summerfield Developments has recently obtained planning permission for another business park at Chelston, Wellington, and is developer of the regional fire headquarters currently being built at the Blackbrook Office Park in Taunton.
