Capsule marks time on a unique development in Exmoor
Community members from an Exmoor village came out in force this week to celebrate the completion of a new livestock market and the construction of an exciting, new residential development.
Summerfield Homes organised the event to bury a time capsule on the new market site, to mark the culmination of many years’ dedication and support from local community groups and organisations. With ten of the 23 new properties available as affordable homes, the development is one of the few residential developments on Exmoor for many years.
The completion of the new livestock market adjacent to the new properties was the focal point for the crowd of school children and community groups involved in burying the time capsule that contained an array of objects including a school jumper, local photographs, parish information and brochures.
Chris Winter, Director of Summerfield Developments said: “Long before the notion of the Big Society, we have very much been involved in a partnership to deliver something really impressive at Cutcombe and we wanted to show our appreciation of the links we have made in the community, by burying the time capsule for future generations to discover.”
Peter Huntley, the Auctioneer and Manager of the new livestock market at Cutcombe said: “All of us are delighted with the new facilities here and Summerfield Homes have been instrumental in bringing it all together. Exmoor National Park and the parish council have been key partners in the scheme to deliver a first class livestock market and enabling the provision of new homes for our community.
“The livestock market plays an important role within the National Park helping to support upland hill farming and the grazing of upland areas and thereby the character of our magnificent landscape.”
The livestock market and all of the properties have been constructed using traditional methods combined with innovative features including air source heat pumps and solar hot water collectors, making them both environmentally friendly and very efficient to run.
“We are thrilled with the levels of interest in the development and it was fantastic that two of the children involved in burying the capsule, Milly and Sam Cook, will shortly be moving in to one of the new properties.,” said Chris. “Although some of the homes are available on the open market and a further two building plots are to be sold later, it’s the affordable housing to rent for local people that is especially important to us at Summerfield.”
